Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medications like Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid have been useful for many people who suffer serious heartburn. Unfortunately, several studies and lawsuits have linked these drugs to chronic kidney disease, kidney inflammation and kidney failure.

If you experienced any of these side effects while taking a PPI medication, our defective drug lawyers may be able to pursue a proton pump inhibitor lawsuit for compensation. Kidney Side Effects

In 1988, Prilosec became the first PPI medication to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat peptic ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Over time, nine more PPI drugs received FDA approval, including Nexium and Prevacid.

Physicians have prescribed and recommended these drugs to millions of patients believing there was no risk in taking them. Regrettably, they were wrong, as multiple studies have linked these drugs to kidney failure, chronic kidney disease and other kidney problems.

  • A 2016 study in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology found that long-term use of PPIs increases the likelihood of kidney failure by 95 percent. The study further revealed that these drugs carry a 28 percent greater likelihood of chronic kidney disease.
  • The Journal of the American Medical Association published another study in February 2016, which found that long-term use of PPI medications increases the risk of chronic kidney disease between 20 and 50 percent. The study also found that those who took PPI medications twice per day had a higher risk for chronic kidney disease than those who took these medications once per day.

The first proton pump inhibitor lawsuit concerning kidney issues was filed in 2016 against AstraZeneca. The plaintiff alleges that using Nexium caused his kidney failure, which required a kidney transplant. He further alleges the manufacturer knew these drugs carried an increased risk of kidney failure and other kidney problems but failed to properly warn the public.

These drugs have become increasingly associated with a range of dangerous and sometimes fatal side effects and long-term dependence. If you used a PPI drug and suffered kidney problems, you may also be able to file a proton pump inhibitor lawsuit to obtain compensation.

Symptoms of Kidney Problems

Patients suffering kidney problems often experience the following symptoms:

  • Fluid in the lungs
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • High blood pressure
  • Arrhythmia
  • Electrolyte abnormalities
  • Problems urinating
  • Swelling or edema

If you or a loved one is taking a PPI and has experienced any of these symptoms, seek medical treatment immediately to determine if symptoms are being caused by chronic kidney disease.

If doctors confirm you are suffering kidney problems, contact our experienced defective drug attorneys to find out about a proton pump inhibitor lawsuit. We may be able to show that the manufacturer of your PPI medication knew or should have known about the risks.
