Research has linked the antipsychotic medication Risperdal to an increased risk of breast development in young men, also known as gynecomastia, which can lead to severe psychological and emotional trauma.
Individuals who have experienced these side effects may be entitled to compensation though a Risperdal lawsuit. Our defective drug attorneys offer a free, no obligation legal consultation to determine if you have a case. We also do not charge legal fees unless your claim has a favorable outcome.

History and Link to Gynecomastia
Risperdal, also known by the generic name risperdone, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993 to treat schizophrenia. Eventually, the drug was also approved to treat a variety of other psychological disorders, including:
- Bipolar disorder
- Autism
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Depression
- Schizoaffective disorder
However, Risperdal manufacturer Johnson & Johnson did not add a warning to the label about the risk for breast development in young men. The risk of breast development was first made public in a study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology in 1999.
Researchers found that men who took risperdone had increased levels of prolactin, the hormone that stimulates breast development. They also found a positive correlation between taking risperdone and experiencing side effects like gynecomastia, ejaculatory dysfunction, erectile dysfunction and decreased libido.
More Research on Gynecomastia
Another study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology in 2006 further supports the connection between Risperdal and gynecomastia. The study found adolescents’ prolactin levels increased significantly when they took risperdone at a dosage commonly used to treat psychotic symptoms. Increased prolactin levels can be accompanied by side effects such as gynecomastia.
Researchers concluded that doctors should be cautious when prescribing risperdone to children, as there was not enough research about the long-term effect of Risperdal on growth or a delay in puberty.
Three years later, another study published in the same journal revealed young men could have elevated prolactin levels for up to two years after taking risperdone.
If you or a loved one took Risperdal and experienced breast development, you may be able to file a Risperdal lawsuit to obtain compensation for physical, financial and emotional damages.

Risperdal Lawsuits
More than 100 Risperdal lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson over allegations Risperdal caused male breast growth.
The first Risperdal lawsuit to go to trial involved a 21-year-old who started taking the drug when he was nine years old. He was emotionally traumatized after the drug caused him to develop breasts, which had to be surgically removed. His case was settled in Sept. 2012 on the first day of trial for an undisclosed amount.
Five more Risperdal lawsuits were settled later that month, but the settlements were kept confidential and Johnson & Johnson did not admit wrongdoing.
In Feb. 2015, a judge awarded $2.5 million to a man who developed large breasts after taking the drug when he was a teenager. The judge also ruled that Johnson & Johnson did not warn about the risk of breast development.
One of the largest settlements in a Risperdal lawsuit came in Nov. 2016, when a jury awarded $70 million to a young man who experienced breast development after taking Risperdal to treat Asperger’s syndrome, impulse control disorder and oppositional defiance disorder.
If you suffered gynecomastia while taking Risperdal, the defective drug lawyers at Janet, Janet & Suggs may be able to file a Risperdal lawsuit to obtain compensation.
