Lipitor

Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit

Studies have indicated that regular use of the cholesterol-lowering statin Lipitor can lead to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Because the drug’s manufacturer failed to warn about these risks, patients who have been diagnosed with this condition after taking this medication may be entitled to file a Lipitor diabetes lawsuit to seek compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other damages. Lipitor Lawsuit Background

A study of 150,000 women over the age of 50 by the Women’s Health Initiative in 2012 revealed that those taking a statin were 48 percent more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes. Those with a low body mass index, or women with normal body weight, had an 86 percent chance of developing diabetes.

Another study conducted at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine found the risk for developing diabetes after taking Lipitor to be almost 50 percent higher among women than men.

Pfizer has known since 1996 that the drug carried a risk of diabetes, but only started warning doctors and patients about the risk when it was forced to so by the FDA in 2012. With adequate warnings and information about this side effect, doctors could have been monitoring patients’ glucose levels for signs of diabetes. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen.
