Wrong-Way Drivers in Massachusetts

Wrong-way collisions are responsible for an estimated 300 to 400 fatalities every year in the U.S. In Massachusetts alone, wrong way accidents have killed 22 people and injured more than 100 since 2011.
Accidents involving wrong-way driving comprises around one percent of the total figure of annual traffic fatalities. These crashes are usually head-on collisions or sideswipes that occur at high speeds and often results in devastating injuries.
Since 2011, at least 407 motorists have been caught driving the wrong way on freeways and interstates, such as Route 128, Route 24 or Route 2.
However, the numbers may be higher, since not all crash data lists the direction that the implicated vehicles were traveling. Law enforcement agencies in Massachusetts have also found it difficult to track the number of wrong-way collisions that would enable safety officials to pinpoint how many drivers are stopped or crash when driving the wrong way.
The victims of wrong-way driving accidents include a Massachusetts woman who was traveling home from work on Interstate 95 when a wrong-way driver struck her, causing another car to nearly crash into her as well. Fortunately, she survived the accident.
However, some drivers were not so lucky, as a young football player with Bridgewater State was killed in wrong-way accident, making him the 13th fatality in 2016.
A car crash caused by wrong-way driving can have fatal consequences for those involve. In addition to property damage, car accident victims can suffer from disabling injuries that require extensive rehabilitation, expensive medical bills, and long and frequent hospital stays.
