New York is the only state that ranks better than Massachusetts in BackgroundChecks.org’s new report ranking states from worst to best for drunk driving problems, including deaths and arrests.
Massachusetts was ranked 49th, making it the second-best state in terms of drunk driving issues.
The report cited the following data about drunk driving issues in the state:
- Deaths from drunk driving: 96
- Increase/decrease in driving under the influence (DUI) crimes from previous year’s data: 32.9 percent decrease (the largest decrease of all 50 states)
- DUI death rate per 100,000 people: 1.41 (tied for lowest of all 50 states)
- DUI arrests: 8,258
- DUI arrest rate per 100,000 people: 121
- Percentage of adults who admitted drinking too much before driving: 2 percent
BackgroundChecks.org created the report with 2014 statistics from various sources, including state and local entities and the Department of Transportation, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They input each state’s statistics into a weighted formula to come up with the rankings.
Despite Massachusetts’ low ranking, the number of DUI deaths and arrests shows there is still work to be done to prevent drunk driving accidents and deaths.
Purpose of the Study
The authors of the study hope it will be an eye-opener to drivers across the nation and make them think twice about driving after drinking.
The fact that more than 10,000 people die from drunk driving each year is a travesty, according to Trent Wilson, co-author of the study.
