Fans Reminded Not to Drink and Drive this Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday is this weekend, which means millions of Americans will be attending or hosting parties and consuming alcoholic beverages.

Unfortunately, this increases the risk of people driving while they are impaired, which can cause dangerous car accidents that often result in death or severe injuries. In 2015, 29 percent of all traffic deaths resulted from accidents involving alcohol impairment. A total of 10,265 people lost their lives in these accidents.

Law enforcement agencies across the nation are joining forces with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to increase awareness of the dangers of drunk driving via the Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk campaign.

The campaign urges partygoers who plan on drinking to make arrangements with a sober driver prior to the party. This person should not drink at all so he or she can deliver you home safely.

If your designated driver consumes any alcohol, you need to make other arrangements for getting home, such as calling a cab or a friend who has not been drinking.

You can also download the NHTSA’s SaferRide mobile app, which allows you to mark your location so a friend or taxi can come pick you up. The app is available on Android and Apple devices via Google Play and the iTunes store.

The NHTSA campaign reminds partygoers that friends do not let friends drive home after drinking. Even if someone’s blood alcohol concentration has not reached the legal limit of 0.08, his or her judgement can still be impaired by minor amounts of alcohol. Alcohol impairment slows reaction times, making it unsafe to be behind the wheel.

If any of your friends have been drinking and they want to drive home, take their keys away and help them find a safe way home.

The campaign encourages hosts of Super Bowl parties to ask guests to arrange for a sober driver to take them home before coming to the party. If you are hosting a party and you do not drink, offer a ride to anyone who needs it.

If any partygoers cannot find a ride home, and you have been drinking, offer to let them stay the night to avoid a drunk driving accident.

If you suffered an injury in a traffic accident caused by a drunk driver, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. A car accident lawyer at Janet, Janet & Suggs can help you pursue justice and obtain fair compensation.
